Linux Kernel up to 5.15.32/5.16.18/5.17.1 tcf_ct_skb_nfct_cached information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.32/5.16.18/5.17.1. Affected by this issue is the function tcf_ct_skb_nfct_cached. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/sched: act_ct: fix ref leak when switching zones When switching zones or network namespaces without doing a ct clear in between, it is now leaking a reference to the old ct entry. That's because tcf_ct_skb_nfct_cached() returns false and tcf_ct_flow_table_lookup() may simply overwrite it. The fix is to, as the ct entry is not reusable, free it already at tcf_ct_skb_nfct_cached().

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-49183 since 02/26/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

Upgrading to version 5.15.33, 5.16.19 or 5.17.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bcbf4e5c3b5b373cd61528392dd1ec8e9c0fd33d/4bb42d73def9411e5cad885b9811987d72431df1/b24793a37d91aacad7cb9893b226a7924a89636a/bcb74e132a76ce0502bb33d5b65533a4ed72d159 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
