Linux Kernel up to 5.17.1 dma_request_channel reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.17.1 and classified as critical. This affects the function dma_request_channel. The manipulation leads to reference count. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2022-49212. There is no available exploit. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.17.1. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function dma_request_channel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mtd: rawnand: atmel: fix refcount issue in atmel_nand_controller_init The reference counting issue happens in several error handling paths on a refcounted object "nc->dmac". In these paths, the function simply returns the error code, forgetting to balance the reference count of "nc->dmac", increased earlier by dma_request_channel(), which may cause refcount leaks. Fix it by decrementing the refcount of specific object in those error paths.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-49212 since 02/26/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240793 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:01983-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.14.276, 4.19.238, 5.4.189, 5.10.110, 5.15.33, 5.16.19 or 5.17.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0856bf27057561f42b37df111603cf5a0d040294/9843c9c98f26c6ad843260b19bfdaa2598f2ae1e/9b08d211db4c447eb1a07df65e45e0aa772e0fa6/a3587259ae553e41d1ce8c7435351a5d6b299a11/fe0e2ce5c87e9c0b9485ff566362030aa55972cf/8baea2b96fa90af8d0f937caf4cf2105ee094d93/f1694169f3674cdf7553aed06864254635679878/fecbd4a317c95d73c849648c406bcf1b6a0ec1cf is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
