Linux Kernel up to 5.15.31/5.16.17/5.17.0 access_ok size integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.31/5.16.17/5.17.0. The affected element is the function access_ok. Such manipulation of the argument size leads to integer overflow. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2022-49289. There is no available exploit. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.31/5.16.17/5.17.0. Affected by this issue is the function access_ok. The manipulation of the argument size with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: uaccess: fix integer overflow on access_ok() Three architectures check the end of a user access against the address limit without taking a possible overflow into account. Passing a negative length or another overflow in here returns success when it should not. Use the most common correct implementation here, which optimizes for a constant 'size' argument, and turns the common case into a single comparison.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-49289 since 02/26/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/16/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.15.32, 5.16.18 or 5.17.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e65d28d4e9bf90a35ba79c06661a572a38391dec/99801e2f457824955da4aadaa035913a6dede03a/a1ad747fc1a0e06d1bf26b996ee8a56b5c8d02d8/222ca305c9fd39e5ed8104da25c09b2b79a516a8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2107). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
