A vulnerability was found in mmaitre314 picklescan up to 0.0.20. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function pip.main. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a incomplete blacklist vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-184. The product implements a protection mechanism that relies on a list of inputs (or properties of inputs) that are not allowed by policy or otherwise require other action to neutralize before additional processing takes place, but the list is incomplete, leading to resultant weaknesses. picklescan before 0.0.21 does not treat 'pip' as an unsafe global. An attacker could craft a malicious model that uses Pickle to pull in a malicious PyPI package (hosted, for example, on pypi.org or GitHub) via `pip.main()`. Because pip is not a restricted global, the model, when scanned with picklescan, would pass security checks and appear to be safe, when it could instead prove to be problematic.
The weakness was shared by Trevor Madge. The advisory is shared at sites.google.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-1716 since 02/26/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1562.006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 0.0.21 eliminates this vulnerability.
