No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Cisco NX-OS Software. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Ethernet Frame Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a insufficient granularity of access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-1220. The product implements access controls via a policy or other feature with the intention to disable or restrict accesses (reads and/or writes) to assets in a system from untrusted agents. However, implemented access controls lack required granularity, which renders the control policy too broad because it allows accesses from unauthorized agents to the security-sensitive assets. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
A vulnerability in the health monitoring diagnostics of Cisco Nexus 3000 Series Switches and Cisco Nexus 9000 Series Switches in standalone NX-OS mode could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause the device to reload unexpectedly, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. This vulnerability is due to the incorrect handling of specific Ethernet frames. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a sustained rate of crafted Ethernet frames to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the device to reload.
The advisory is shared for download at sec.cloudapps.cisco.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-20111 since 10/10/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216942 (Cisco Nexus 3000 9000 Series Switches Health Monitoring Diagnostics DoS (cisco-sa-n3kn9k-healthdos-eOqSWK4g)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
