Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.15/6.13.3. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function msm_ioctl_gem_submit of the component gem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/msm/gem: prevent integer overflow in msm_ioctl_gem_submit() The "submit->cmd[i].size" and "submit->cmd[i].offset" variables are u32 values that come from the user via the submit_lookup_cmds() function. This addition could lead to an integer wrapping bug so use size_add() to prevent that. Patchwork: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/624696/
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-52559 since 02/27/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/24/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236983 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / 24.10 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7521-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.16, 6.13.4 or 6.14-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2f1845e46c41ed500789d53dc45b383b7745c96c/e43a0f1327a1ee70754f8a0de6e0262cfa3e0b87/3a47f4b439beb98e955d501c609dfd12b7836d61 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (236983) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0453). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
