Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.128/6.6.77/6.12.13/6.13.2. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function nilfs_fiemap of the component nilfs2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer underflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-191. The product subtracts one value from another, such that the result is less than the minimum allowable integer value, which produces a value that is not equal to the correct result. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nilfs2: fix possible int overflows in nilfs_fiemap() Since nilfs_bmap_lookup_contig() in nilfs_fiemap() calculates its result by being prepared to go through potentially maxblocks == INT_MAX blocks, the value in n may experience an overflow caused by left shift of blkbits. While it is extremely unlikely to occur, play it safe and cast right hand expression to wider type to mitigate the issue. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with static analysis tool SVACE.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-21736 since 12/29/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/25/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233595 (Debian dla-4102 : linux-config-6.1 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.129, 6.6.78, 6.12.14, 6.13.3 or 6.14-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f3d80f34f58445355fa27b9579a449fb186aa64e/f2bd0f1ab47822fe5bd699c8458b896c4b2edea1/b9495a9109abc31d3170f7aad7d48aa64610a1a2/250423300b4b0335918be187ef3cade248c06e6a/6438ef381c183444f7f9d1de18f22661cba1e946 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (233595) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0453). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
