Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.128/6.6.77/6.12.13/6.13.2 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component ocfs2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: handle a symlink read error correctly Patch series "Convert ocfs2 to use folios". Mark did a conversion of ocfs2 to use folios and sent it to me as a giant patch for review ;-) So I've redone it as individual patches, and credited Mark for the patches where his code is substantially the same. It's not a bad way to do it; his patch had some bugs and my patches had some bugs. Hopefully all our bugs were different from each other. And hopefully Mark likes all the changes I made to his code! This patch (of 23): If we can't read the buffer, be sure to unlock the page before returning.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-58001 since 02/27/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 231921 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-58001), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.129, 6.6.78, 6.12.14, 6.13.3 or 6.14-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6e143eb4ab83c24e7ad3e3d8e7daa241d9c38377/b6833b38984d1e9f20dd80f9ec9050c10d687f30/52a326f93ceb9348264fddf7bab6e345db69e08c/5e3b3ec7c3cb5ba5629a766e4f0926db72cf0a1f/2b4c2094da6d84e69b843dd3317902e977bf64bd is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (231921) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0453). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
