It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.75/6.12.12/6.13.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function _read_freq. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: OPP: add index check to assert to avoid buffer overflow in _read_freq() Pass the freq index to the assert function to make sure we do not read a freq out of the opp->rates[] table when called from the indexed variants: dev_pm_opp_find_freq_exact_indexed() or dev_pm_opp_find_freq_ceil/floor_indexed(). Add a secondary parameter to the assert function, unused for assert_single_clk() then add assert_clk_index() which will check for the clock index when called from the _indexed() find functions.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-57998 since 02/27/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/24/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233595 (Debian dla-4102 : linux-config-6.1 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.76, 6.12.13, 6.13.2 or 6.14-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 774dd6f0f0a61c9c3848e025d7d9eeed1a7ca4cd/eb6ffa0192ba83ece1a318b956265519c5c7dcec/7d68c20638e50d5eb4576492a7958328ae445248/da2a6acc73933b7812c94794726e438cde39e037/d659bc68ed489022ea33342cfbda2911a81e7a0d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (233595) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0453). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
