This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2025-21817. There is no exploit available.
The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.13.2. This affects the function store. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: block: mark GFP_NOIO around sysfs ->store() sysfs ->store is called with queue freezed, meantime we have several ->store() callbacks(update_nr_requests, wbt, scheduler) to allocate memory with GFP_KERNEL which may run into direct reclaim code path, then potential deadlock can be caused. Fix the issue by marking NOIO around sysfs ->store()
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-21817 since 12/29/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 237679 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool, kernel6.12, kernel6.12-modules-extra (ALAS2023-2025-984)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.13.3 or 6.14-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2566ce907e5d5db8a039647208e029ce559baa31/7c0be4ead1f8f5f8be0803f347de0de81e3b8e1c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (237679), EUVD (EUVD-2025-5983) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0461). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
