The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the SockPrintf function in wu-ftpd 2.6.2 and earlier, when compiled with MAIL_ADMIN option enabled on a system that supports very long pathnames, might allow remote anonymous users to execute arbitrary code by uploading a file with a long pathname, which triggers the overflow when wu-ftpd constructs a notification message to the administrator.
The bug was discovered 09/22/2003. The weakness was presented 09/22/2003 by Adam Zabrocki (pi3 and pi3ki31ny) as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-1327 since 05/14/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
