mnfst manifest up to 4.9.0 Password Hash hash without salt

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in mnfst manifest up to 4.9.0. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Password Hash Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a hash without salt vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-759. The product uses a one-way cryptographic hash against an input that should not be reversible, such as a password, but the product does not also use a salt as part of the input. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Manifest offers users a one-file micro back end. Prior to version 4.9.1, Manifest employs a weak password hashing implementation that uses SHA3 without a salt. This exposes user passwords to a higher risk of being cracked if an attacker gains access to the database. Without the use of a salt, identical passwords across multiple users will result in the same hash, making it easier for attackers to identify and exploit patterns, thereby accelerating the cracking process. Version 4.9.1 fixes the issue.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-27408 since 02/24/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1110.002.

Upgrading to version 4.9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3ed6f1324e96ad469ad929d470dcd0cc386c6c69 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
