Details
A vulnerability was found in PwnDoc up to 1.1.x. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Backup Restore Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-23. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize sequences such as ".." that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
PwnDoc is a penetration test reporting application. Prior to version 1.2.0, the backup restore functionality is vulnerable to path traversal in the TAR entry's name, allowing an attacker to overwrite any file on the system with their content. By overwriting an included `.js` file and restarting the container, this allows for Remote Code Execution as an administrator. The remote code execution occurs because any user with the `backups:create` and `backups:update` (only administrators by default) is able to overwrite any file on the system. Version 1.2.0 fixes the issue.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-27410 since 02/24/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 1.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 98f284291d73d3a0b11d3181d845845c192d1080 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
