A vulnerability was found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.2.1 (Firewall Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file SNMPConfig.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. SNMPConfig.php in the management console in Symantec Web Gateway (SWG) before 5.2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 06/16/2014 by Brandon Perry with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as SYM14-010 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-5017 since 07/29/2013. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
By approaching the search of inurl:SNMPConfig.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76144 (Symantec Web Gateway < 5.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM14-010)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12984 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM14-010)).
Upgrading to version 5.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
