Details
A vulnerability was found in Ethereal (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in Ethereal 0.10.x up to 0.10.14 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via the (1) ALCAP dissector, (2) Network Instruments file code, or (3) NetXray/Windows Sniffer file code.
The weakness was published 04/25/2006 with Coverity (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ethereal.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-1934 since 04/20/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21899 (CentOS 3 / 4 : ethereal (CESA-2006:0420)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117708 (CentOS Security Update for Ethereal (CESA-2006:0420)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
