Details
A vulnerability was found in Ls3 Fenice 1.10. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function parse_url. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the parse_url function in the RTSP module (rtsp/parse_url.c) in Fenice 1.10 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long URL.
The bug was discovered 04/23/2006. The weakness was published 04/25/2006 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-2022 since 04/25/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21610 (Fenice <= 1.10 Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
