A vulnerability was found in libtiff up to 3.8.0 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function tifffetchanyarray of the file tif_dirread.c. Multiple vulnerabilities in libtiff before 3.8.1 allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service via a TIFF image that triggers errors in (1) the TIFFFetchAnyArray function in (a) tif_dirread.c; (2) certain "codec cleanup methods" in (b) tif_lzw.c, (c) tif_pixarlog.c, and (d) tif_zip.c; (3) and improper restoration of setfield and getfield methods in cleanup functions within (e) tif_jpeg.c, tif_pixarlog.c, (f) tif_fax3.c, and tif_zip.c.
The bug was discovered 04/25/2006. The weakness was disclosed 04/25/2006 by Tavis Ormandy as Bug 189933 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2024 since 04/25/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156195 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for kdegraphics (ELSA-2006:0648)).
Upgrading to version 3.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
