Details
A vulnerability has been found in Keras up to 3.7.x and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function Model.load_model of the file config.json of the component Python Module Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Keras Model.load_model function permits arbitrary code execution, even with safe_mode=True, through a manually constructed, malicious .keras archive. By altering the config.json file within the archive, an attacker can specify arbitrary Python modules and functions, along with their arguments, to be loaded and executed during model loading.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-1550 since 02/21/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:config.json it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 3.8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (52359) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-7406). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
