pdnsd up to 1.2.3 Par memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in pdnsd. The affected element is an unknown function. Such manipulation leads to memory leak. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2006-2076. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in pdnsd (Domain Name Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Memory leak in Paul Rombouts pdnsd before 1.2.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a DNS query with an unsupported (1) QTYPE or (2) QCLASS, as demonstrated by the OUSPG PROTOS DNS test suite.

The weakness was presented 04/27/2006 by OUSPG with Oulu University Secure Programming Group (OUSPG) as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-2076 since 04/27/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21352 (GLSA-200605-10 : pdnsd: Denial of Service and potential arbitrary code execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26081), Tenable (21352), SecurityFocus (BID 17694†), OSVDB (57052†) and Secunia (SA19808†). See VDB-2189, VDB-30095, VDB-29950 and VDB-29949 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
