str4d ed25519-java up to 0.3.0 EdDSA signature verification

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in str4d ed25519-java up to 0.3.0. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component EdDSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a signature verification vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-347. The product does not verify, or incorrectly verifies, the cryptographic signature for data. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The implementation of EdDSA in EdDSA-Java (aka ed25519-java) through 0.3.0 exhibits signature malleability and does not satisfy the SUF-CMA (Strong Existential Unforgeability under Chosen Message Attacks) property. This allows attackers to create new valid signatures different from previous signatures for a known message.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-36843 since 03/13/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 232871 (Jenkins plugins Multiple Vulnerabilities (2025-03-19)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (232871) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2163). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
