MongoDB libbson/Server bson_append functions heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in MongoDB libbson and Server and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function bson_append functions. This manipulation causes heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2025-0755. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MongoDB libbson and Server (the affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function bson_append functions. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The various bson_append functions in the MongoDB C driver library may be susceptible to buffer overflow when performing operations that could result in a final BSON document which exceeds the maximum allowable size (INT32_MAX), resulting in a segmentation fault and possible application crash. This issue affected libbson versions prior to 1.27.5, MongoDB Server v8.0 versions prior to 8.0.1 and MongoDB Server v7.0 versions prior to 7.0.16

The weakness was published by selmelc. It is possible to read the advisory at jira.mongodb.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-0755 since 01/27/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 235667 (Debian dla-4160 : libbson-xs-perl - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
