Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in open-webui up to 0.3.8 on Windows. This affects the function download_model. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-29. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize '\..\filename' (leading backslash dot dot) sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In version 0.3.8 of open-webui/open-webui, an arbitrary file write vulnerability exists in the download_model endpoint. When deployed on Windows, the application improperly handles file paths, allowing an attacker to manipulate the file path to write files to arbitrary locations on the server's filesystem. This can result in overwriting critical system or application files, causing denial of service, or potentially achieving remote code execution (RCE). RCE can allow an attacker to execute malicious code with the privileges of the user running the application, leading to a full system compromise.
It is possible to read the advisory at huntr.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-7033 since 07/23/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/29/2025). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
