Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in h2oai h2o-3 up to 3.46.0. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Model Export Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a absolute path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-36. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize absolute path sequences such as "/abs/path" that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In h2oai/h2o-3 version 3.46.0, the endpoint for exporting models does not restrict the export location, allowing an attacker to export a model to any file in the server's file structure, thereby overwriting it. This vulnerability can be exploited to overwrite any file on the target server with a trained model file, although the content of the overwrite is not controllable by the attacker.
The advisory is available at huntr.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-6854 since 07/17/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/15/2025). This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
