Details
A vulnerability has been found in mlflow up to 2.16.x and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Dbfs Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-29. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize '\..\filename' (leading backslash dot dot) sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
A path traversal vulnerability exists in mlflow/mlflow version 2.15.1. When users configure and use the dbfs service, concatenating the URL directly into the file protocol results in an arbitrary file read vulnerability. This issue occurs because only the path part of the URL is checked, while parts such as query and parameters are not handled. The vulnerability is triggered if the user has configured the dbfs service, and during usage, the service is mounted to a local directory.
The advisory is shared for download at huntr.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-8859 since 09/13/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 2.17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7791b8cdd595f21b5f179c7b17e4b5eb5cbbe654 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
