Quagga Routing Software Suite up to 0.97 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Quagga Routing Software Suite up to 0.97 (Network Routing Software). Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

RIPd in Quagga 0.98 and 0.99 before 20060503 does not properly implement configurations that (1) disable RIPv1 or (2) require plaintext or MD5 authentication, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information (routing state) via REQUEST packets such as SEND UPDATE.

The bug was discovered 05/03/2006. The weakness was presented 05/03/2006 by Konstantin V. Gavrilenko (Website). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-2223 since 05/05/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22601 (Debian DSA-1059-1 : quagga - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117699 (CentOS Security Update for Quagga (CESA-2006:0525)).

Upgrading to version 0.98 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
