Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) for Windows NT 4.0, 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a BuildContextW request with a large (1) UuidString or (2) GuidIn of a certain length, which causes an out-of-range memory access, aka the MSDTC Denial of Service Vulnerability. NOTE: this is a variant of CVE-2005-2119.
The weakness was released 05/09/2006 by Derek Soeder (DiGiT) with eEye Digital Security. It is possible to read the advisory at MS06-018. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1184 since 03/12/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21331 (MS06-018: Vulnerability in MSDTC Could Allow Denial of Service (913580)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90310 (Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator Could Allow Denial of Service (MS06-018)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6419. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3826.
