Linux Kernel up to 6.1.10 lru_gen_migrate_mm denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.10. This affects the function lru_gen_migrate_mm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm: multi-gen LRU: fix crash during cgroup migration lru_gen_migrate_mm() assumes lru_gen_add_mm() runs prior to itself. This isn't true for the following scenario: CPU 1 CPU 2 clone() cgroup_can_fork() cgroup_procs_write() cgroup_post_fork() task_lock() lru_gen_migrate_mm() task_unlock() task_lock() lru_gen_add_mm() task_unlock() And when the above happens, kernel crashes because of linked list corruption (mm_struct->lru_gen.list).

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-52940 since 08/21/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 6.1.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 04448022311cebd30969d3aebdde765f1258b360/de08eaa6156405f2e9369f06ba5afae0e4ab3b62 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0649). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
