Linux Kernel up to 6.1.8 smbd_destroy use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.271/5.4.230/5.10.165/5.15.90/6.1.8. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function smbd_destroy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: Fix oops due to uncleared server->smbd_conn in reconnect In smbd_destroy(), clear the server->smbd_conn pointer after freeing the smbd_connection struct that it points to so that reconnection doesn't get confused.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53006 since 03/27/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/07/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241018 (EulerOS 2.0 SP13 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-1704)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.272, 5.4.231, 5.10.166, 5.15.91 or 6.1.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a9640c0b268405f2540e8203a545e930ea88bb7d/91be54849d5392050f5b847b42bd5e6221551ac8/e037baee16e0b9ace7e730888fcae9cec11daff2/4b83bc6f87eedab4599b0123e572a422689444be/5109607a4ece7cd8536172bf7549eb4dce1f3576/b7ab9161cf5ddc42a288edf9d1a61f3bdffe17c7 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (241018) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0649). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
