This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2023-53019. There is not any exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.8. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function mdiobus_get_phy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: mdio: validate parameter addr in mdiobus_get_phy() The caller may pass any value as addr, what may result in an out-of-bounds access to array mdio_map. One existing case is stmmac_init_phy() that may pass -1 as addr. Therefore validate addr before using it.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-53019 since 03/27/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234545 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:1293-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.14.305, 4.19.272, 5.4.231, 5.10.166, 5.15.91 or 6.1.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1d80c259dfbadefa61b7ea334dfce5cb57f8c72f/c431a3d642593bbdb99e8a9e3eed608b730db6f8/8a7b9560a3a8eb8724888c426e05926752f73aa0/4bc5f1f6bc94e695dfd912122af96e7115a0ddb8/ad67de330d83e8078372b52af18ffe8d39e26c85/7879626296e6ffd838ae0f2af1ab49ee46354973/867dbe784c5010a466f00a7d1467c1c5ea569c75 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (234545) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0649). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
