Apache HTTP Server 2.0.47 mod_cgi denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server 2.0.47 (Web Server). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown functionality of the component mod_cgi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

mod_cgi in Apache 2.0.39 and 2.0.40 allows local users and possibly remote attackers to cause a denial of service (hang and memory consumption) by causing a CGI script to send a large amount of data to stderr, which results in a read/write deadlock between httpd and the CGI script.

The weakness was presented 09/29/2003 by Brandon Black with Apache as Bug 22030 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at nagoya.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-1850 since 06/29/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86636 (Apache2 MOD_CGI STDERR Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityfocus.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10200), Exploit-DB (21854), SecurityFocus (BID 8725†), OSVDB (2613†) and Secunia (SA9870†). Further details are available at itnews.ch. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
