Details
A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL (Database Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
PostgreSQL 8.1.x before 8.1.4, 8.0.x before 8.0.8, 7.4.x before 7.4.13, 7.3.x before 7.3.15, and earlier versions allows context-dependent attackers to bypass SQL injection protection methods in applications that use multibyte encodings that allow the "\" (backslash) byte 0x5c to be the trailing byte of a multibyte character, such as SJIS, BIG5, GBK, GB18030, and UHC, which cannot be handled correctly by a client that does not understand multibyte encodings, aka a second variant of "Encoding-Based SQL Injection." NOTE: it could be argued that this is a class of issue related to interaction errors between the client and PostgreSQL, but a CVE has been assigned since PostgreSQL is treating this as a preventative measure against this class of problem.
The weakness was shared 05/24/2006 by Akio Ishida (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.postgresql.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-2314 since 05/11/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27200 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : dovecot (dovecot-1987)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19206 (PostgreSQL Multibyte Character Encoding SQL Injection Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26627), Tenable (27200), SecurityFocus (BID 18092†), OSVDB (25731†) and Secunia (SA20231†). The entries VDB-2261 and VDB-28621 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
