A vulnerability was found in OISF Suricata up to 7.0.8 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Setting Handler. The manipulation of the argument decode_base64 with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-770. Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. The bytes setting in the decode_base64 keyword is not properly limited. Due to this, signatures using the keyword and setting can cause large memory allocations of up to 4 GiB per thread. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.0.9.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2025-29917 since 03/12/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
