Details
A vulnerability was found in LDS Crypt::CBC up to 3.04 on Perl. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function rand. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak prng vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-338. The product uses a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) in a security context, but the PRNG's algorithm is not cryptographically strong. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Crypt::CBC versions between 1.21 and 3.04 for Perl may use the rand() function as the default source of entropy, which is not cryptographically secure, for cryptographic functions. This issue affects operating systems where "/dev/urandom'" is unavailable. In that case, Crypt::CBC will fallback to use the insecure rand() function.
The weakness was released by Robert Rothenberg. The advisory is shared for download at perldoc.perl.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-2814 since 03/26/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
