The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.14.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function jfs_truncate_nolock. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: jfs: add check read-only before truncation in jfs_truncate_nolock() Added a check for "read-only" mode in the `jfs_truncate_nolock` function to avoid errors related to writing to a read-only filesystem. Call stack: block_write_begin() { jfs_write_failed() { jfs_truncate() { jfs_truncate_nolock() { txEnd() { ... log = JFS_SBI(tblk->sb)->log; // (log == NULL) If the `isReadOnly(ip)` condition is triggered in `jfs_truncate_nolock`, the function execution will stop, and no further data modification will occur. Instead, the `xtTruncate` function will be called with the "COMMIT_WMAP" flag, preventing modifications in "read-only" mode.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-58094 since 03/06/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/16/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240657 (Ubuntu 25.04 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7594-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.14.2 or 6.15-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f605bc3e162f5c6faa9bd3602ce496053d06a4bb/b5799dd77054c1ec49b0088b006c9908e256843b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (240657) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0844). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
