Linux Kernel up to 6.14.1 usbnet rx_complete race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.14.1. It has been rated as problematic. Impacted is the function rx_complete of the component usbnet. The manipulation leads to race condition. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2025-22050. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.14.1 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function rx_complete of the component usbnet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usbnet:fix NPE during rx_complete Missing usbnet_going_away Check in Critical Path. The usb_submit_urb function lacks a usbnet_going_away validation, whereas __usbnet_queue_skb includes this check. This inconsistency creates a race condition where: A URB request may succeed, but the corresponding SKB data fails to be queued. Subsequent processes: (e.g., rx_complete → defer_bh → __skb_unlink(skb, list)) attempt to access skb->next, triggering a NULL pointer dereference (Kernel Panic).

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-22050 since 12/29/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234884 (Debian dsa-5907 : affs-modules-6.1.0-33-4kc-malta-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.15.180, 6.1.134, 6.6.87, 6.12.23, 6.13.11, 6.14.2 or 6.15-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 95789c2f94fd29dce8759f9766baa333f749287c/0f10f83acfd619e13c64d6705908dfd792f19544/acacd48a37b52fc95f621765762c04152b58d642/d689645cd1594ea1d13cb0c404f8ad1011353e0e/0c30988588b28393e3e8873d5654f910e86391ba/fd9ee3f0d6a53844f65efde581c91bbb0ff749ac/51de3600093429e3b712e5f091d767babc5dd6df is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (234884) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0844). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
