A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Excel Viewer 3.x (Spreadsheet Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component OCX ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Multiple buffer overflows in the Office Viewer OCX ActiveX control (oa.ocx) 3.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long argument to the (1) HttpDownloadFile, (2) Open, (3) OpenWebFile, (4) DoOleCommand, (5) FTPDownloadFile, (6) FTPUploadFile, (7) HttpUploadFile, (8) Save, or (9) SaveWebFile function.
The weakness was presented 05/07/2007 by shinnai (Website). The advisory is shared at moaxb.blogspot.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-2588 since 05/09/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by shinnai and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.
