A vulnerability was found in Artifex Ghostscript up to 10.04.x. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function decode_utf8 of the file base/gp_utf8.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-24. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize "../" sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. In Artifex Ghostscript before 10.05.0, decode_utf8 in base/gp_utf8.c mishandles overlong UTF-8 encoding. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2024-46954.
The advisory is available at bugs.ghostscript.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-46646 since 04/26/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult.
