A vulnerability has been found in SquirrelMail (Mail Client Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component magic_quotes_gpc. The manipulation of the argument array with an unknown input leads to a file inclusion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-73. The product allows user input to control or influence paths or file names that are used in filesystem operations. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
** DISPUTED ** PHP remote file inclusion vulnerability in functions/plugin.php in SquirrelMail 1.4.6 and earlier, if register_globals is enabled and magic_quotes_gpc is disabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via a URL in the plugins array parameter. NOTE: this issue has been disputed by third parties, who state that Squirrelmail provides prominent warnings to the administrator when register_globals is enabled. Since the varieties of administrator negligence are uncountable, perhaps this type of issue should not be included in CVE. However, the original developer has posted a security advisory, so there might be relevant real-world environments under which this vulnerability is applicable.

The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117683 (CentOS Security Update for SquirrelMail (CESA-2006:0547)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
