Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.134/6.6.87/6.12.24/6.14.3/6.15-rc2. This vulnerability affects the function btrtl_initialize of the file drivers/bluetooth/btrtl.c of the component Bluetooth. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: btrtl: Prevent potential NULL dereference The btrtl_initialize() function checks that rtl_load_file() either had an error or it loaded a zero length file. However, if it loaded a zero length file then the error code is not set correctly. It results in an error pointer vs NULL bug, followed by a NULL pointer dereference. This was detected by Smatch: drivers/bluetooth/btrtl.c:592 btrtl_initialize() warn: passing zero to 'ERR_PTR'
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-37792 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 237255 (Debian dla-4178 : ata-modules-5.10.0-34-armmp-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.135, 6.6.88, 6.12.25, 6.14.4 or 6.15-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability.
