Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.0.9. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function kasprintf of the component pinctrl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pinctrl: devicetree: fix null pointer dereferencing in pinctrl_dt_to_map Here is the BUG report by KASAN about null pointer dereference: BUG: KASAN: null-ptr-deref in strcmp+0x2e/0x50 Read of size 1 at addr 0000000000000000 by task python3/2640 Call Trace: strcmp __of_find_property of_find_property pinctrl_dt_to_map kasprintf() would return NULL pointer when kmalloc() fail to allocate. So directly return ENOMEM, if kasprintf() return NULL pointer.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-49832 since 05/01/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
