Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.0.8. Affected by this issue is the function PCS_USB of the component phy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: phy: qcom-qmp-combo: fix NULL-deref on runtime resume Commit fc64623637da ("phy: qcom-qmp-combo,usb: add support for separate PCS_USB region") started treating the PCS_USB registers as potentially separate from the PCS registers but used the wrong base when no PCS_USB offset has been provided. Fix the PCS_USB base used at runtime resume to prevent dereferencing a NULL pointer on platforms that do not provide a PCS_USB offset (e.g. SC7180).
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-49848 since 05/01/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 6.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c559a8b5cfa3db196ced0257b288f17027621348/04948e757148f870a31f4887ea2239403f516c3c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
