Linux Kernel up to 5.15.78/6.0.8 net ipc_pcie_read_bios_cfg memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.78/6.0.8. This vulnerability affects the function ipc_pcie_read_bios_cfg of the component net. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: wwan: iosm: fix memory leak in ipc_pcie_read_bios_cfg ipc_pcie_read_bios_cfg() is using the acpi_evaluate_dsm() to obtain the wwan power state configuration from BIOS but is not freeing the acpi_object. The acpi_evaluate_dsm() returned acpi_object to be freed. Free the acpi_object after use.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-49855 since 05/01/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.15.79 or 6.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 13b1ea861e8aeb701bcfbfe436b943efa2d44029/7560ceef4d2832a67e8781d924e129c7f542376f/d38a648d2d6cc7bee11c6f533ff9426a00c2a74c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
