Linux Kernel up to 6.0.8 wifi query_regdb_file alpha2 memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.266/5.4.224/5.10.154/5.15.78/6.0.8. This issue affects the function query_regdb_file of the component wifi. The manipulation of the argument alpha2 with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: cfg80211: fix memory leak in query_regdb_file() In the function query_regdb_file() the alpha2 parameter is duplicated using kmemdup() and subsequently freed in regdb_fw_cb(). However, request_firmware_nowait() can fail without calling regdb_fw_cb() and thus leak memory.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-49881 since 05/01/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 242218 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:02334-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.267, 5.4.225, 5.10.155, 5.15.79 or 6.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 219446396786330937bcd382a7bc4ccd767383bc/0ede1a988299e95d54bd89551fd635980572e920/e1e12180321f416d83444f2cdc9259e0f5093d35/38c9fa2cc6bf4b6e1a74057aef8b5cffd23d3264/e9b5a4566d5bc71cc901be50d1fa24da00613120/57b962e627ec0ae53d4d16d7bd1033e27e67677a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (242218) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0922). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
