Linux Kernel up to 6.1.21/6.2.8 net integer underflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.21/6.2.8. Affected is an unknown function of the component net. The manipulation results in integer underflow. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-53068. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.21/6.2.8. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component net. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer underflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-191. The product subtracts one value from another, such that the result is less than the minimum allowable integer value, which produces a value that is not equal to the correct result. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: usb: lan78xx: Limit packet length to skb->len Packet length retrieved from descriptor may be larger than the actual socket buffer length. In such case the cloned skb passed up the network stack will leak kernel memory contents. Additionally prevent integer underflow when size is less than ETH_FCS_LEN.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-53068 since 05/02/2025. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/12/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 264474 (EulerOS 2.0 SP12 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-2012)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.22 or 6.2.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 83de34967473ed31d276381373713cc2869a42e5/44b9ed73369fc5ec85dd2ee487e986301792a82d/7f247f5a2c18b3f21206cdd51193df4f38e1b9f5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (264474). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
