Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.102/6.1.19/6.2.6. Affected by this issue is the function debugfs_lookup. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: powerpc/iommu: fix memory leak with using debugfs_lookup() When calling debugfs_lookup() the result must have dput() called on it, otherwise the memory will leak over time. To make things simpler, just call debugfs_lookup_and_remove() instead which handles all of the logic at once.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-53097 since 05/02/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 5.15.103, 6.1.20 or 6.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e3a62a35f903fd8be5b44542fe3901ec45f16757/24c1bd1cd0d1ff821fd7d2f01a1e648c7882dfc2/4050498c0ae3946c223fc63e9dd7b878b76611e0/b505063910c134778202dfad9332dfcecb76bab3 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
