Summary
A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 6.2.7. This impacts an unknown function of the component net. The manipulation leads to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2023-53125. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.2.7 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component net. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: usb: smsc75xx: Limit packet length to skb->len Packet length retrieved from skb data may be larger than the actual socket buffer length (up to 9026 bytes). In such case the cloned skb passed up the network stack will leak kernel memory contents.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53125 since 05/02/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/10/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 241751 (Amazon Linux 2 : kernel (ALAS-2025-2909)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.14.311, 4.19.279, 5.4.238, 5.10.176, 5.15.104, 6.1.21 or 6.2.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4a4de0a68b18485c68ab4f0cfa665b1633c6d277/53966d572d056d6b234cfe76a5f9d60049d3c178/9fabdd79051a9fe51388df099aff6e4b660fedd2/e294f0aa47e4844f3d3c8766c02accd5a76a7d4e/105db6574281e1e03fcbf87983f4fee111682306/c7bdc137ca163b90917c1eeba4f1937684bd4f8b/8ee5df9c039e37b9d8eb5e3de08bfb7f53d31cb6/d8b228318935044dafe3a5bc07ee71a1f1424b8d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
