Details
A vulnerability was found in Net Portal Dynamic System up to 5.10. It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code of the file header.php. The manipulation of the argument ModPath with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in Net Portal Dynamic System (NPDS) 5.10 and earlier allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) sequence and trailing null (%00) byte in the (1) Default_Theme parameter to header.php or (2) ModPath parameter to modules/cluster-paradise/cluster-E.php.
The weakness was released 06/09/2006 by DarkFig (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-2952 since 06/12/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:header.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
