Linux Kernel up to 6.12.25/6.14.4/6.15-rc2 ksmbd wait_event_timeout missing initialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.25/6.14.4/6.15-rc2. This affects the function wait_event_timeout of the component ksmbd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing initialization vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-456. The product does not initialize critical variables, which causes the execution environment to use unexpected values. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: fix WARNING "do not call blocking ops when !TASK_RUNNING" wait_event_timeout() will set the state of the current task to TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE, before doing the condition check. This means that ksmbd_durable_scavenger_alive() will try to acquire the mutex while already in a sleeping state. The scheduler warns us by giving the following warning: do not call blocking ops when !TASK_RUNNING; state=2 set at [] prepare_to_wait_event+0x9f/0x6c0 WARNING: CPU: 2 PID: 4147 at kernel/sched/core.c:10099 __might_sleep+0x12f/0x160 mutex lock is not needed in ksmbd_durable_scavenger_alive().

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-37802 since 04/16/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/14/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240657 (Ubuntu 25.04 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7594-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.26, 6.14.5 or 6.15-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8f805b3746d2f41702c77cba22f94f8415fadd1a/cd161198e091e8a62b9bd631be970ea9a87d2d6a/1df0d4c616138784e033ad337961b6e1a6bcd999 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (240657), EUVD (EUVD-2025-13991) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0975). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
