rack-session up to 2.1.0 Session Cookie Rack::Session::Pool race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in rack-session up to 2.1.0. This affects the function Rack::Session::Pool of the component Session Cookie Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Rack::Session is a session management implementation for Rack. In versions starting from 2.0.0 to before 2.1.1, when using the Rack::Session::Pool middleware, and provided the attacker can acquire a session cookie (already a major issue), the session may be restored if the attacker can trigger a long running request (within that same session) adjacent to the user logging out, in order to retain illicit access even after a user has attempted to logout. This issue has been patched in version 2.1.1.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-46336 since 04/23/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 252910 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-46336), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
