A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 5.5.29/5.6.13 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file phar/util.c of the component Phar File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. The phar_get_entry_data function in ext/phar/util.c in PHP before 5.5.30 and 5.6.x before 5.6.14 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a .phar file with a crafted TAR archive entry in which the Link indicator references a file that does not exist.
The advisory is available at bugs.php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7803 since 10/09/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169006 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for php53 (SUSE-SU-2016:1638-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.5.30 or 5.6.14 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at php.net. Applying the patch d698f0ae51f67c9cce870b09c59df3d6ba959244 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
